The Wümme rises in the heart of the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park, at the foot of the Wulfsberg. This small hill is not located directly on the Wümme Bike Trail, but rather below the village of Niederhaverbeck. From there, the Wümme initially winds its way as a small stream through the beautiful heathland. Gradually, it widens slightly and meanders as a small river through a vast meadow landscape, parts of which are protected nature reserves. Near the artists’ village of Fischerhude, it splits into a northern, central, and southern branch, which converge again near Borgfeld. In Ritterhude, the Wümme joins the Hamme and Lesum rivers and, shortly thereafter, flows into the Weser as a stately river.
Enjoy a diverse North German landscape shaped by the Wümme with wonderful heathlands, expansive moors, quiet forests, lush meadows and fields, floodplain landscapes, and dikes. Along the way, idyllic villages, charming small towns, the artists’ village of Fischerhude, and Bremen’s “big wide world” invite you to explore and linger. The Wümme Bike Trail takes you along the Wümme River, sometimes closer and sometimes farther from it, on the northern and southern routes.
Cyclists can ride the entire loop, or just the northern route or the southern route of the Wümme Bike Trail. Numerous cross-connections also divide the bike path into attractive individual sections, making shorter day trips possible as well.

Directions
- If you’d like to ride the entire Wümme Bike Trail as a loop (approx. 250 km), we recommend starting the route in the Lüneburg Heath, where the Wümme River originates.
Start in the heathland village of Undeloh and first follow the southern route to Bremen-Vegesack. For the last 3 km to the Vegesack Museum Harbor and the Vegesack Weser Promenade, the northern and southern routes run parallel. Finally, take the predominantly embanked northern route of the Wümme Bike Trail back to the starting point. Of course, you can also join the Wümme Bike Trail at other locations, such as Schneverdingen, Rotenburg (Wümme), Bremen, or Bremen-Vegesack.

Safety guidelines

In the Lüneburg Heath Nature Reserve, however, you should be prepared for sandy, occasionally slightly hilly sections of the route and allow enough riding time for this stage.
