Naturschutzgebiet Lüneburger Heide

Nature reserve/Naturschutzgebiet
Nature park

Pure nature!

The nature reserve can be visited on foot, by bike, on horseback or with the carriages that are waiting for visitors in the large parking lots. To protect the landscape and the flora and fauna, motor vehicles are generally prohibited.

The Nature Conservation Park Association (VNP) offers holders of the ErlebnisCard discounted admission to the Wilsede Heath Museum.

There are two information centers: the Hans-Pforte-Haus in Niederhaverbeck with a bee exhibition worth seeing and the Heath Experience Center in Undeloh. Both houses offer free admission.

In Wilsede you will find many Bronze Age burial mounds, historical trails, boundary markers, erratic block walls, old sheepfolds, stairwells and thatched farmhouses in impressive courtyard groves. The village is surrounded by the largest contiguous heathland in Central Europe.

In the center of the nature reserve is the 169.2 m high Wilseder Berg, the highest elevation in the northwest German lowlands. Heaths were created by the impact of man; the forest was increasingly pushed back by clearing, grazing and fire. On the dry, sandy soils that predominate in the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve, heathland forms developed in which broom heather (Calluna vulgaris) is the dominant plant species. In damp locations, it is replaced by the bell heather (Erica tetralix).

In the Lüneburg Heath, the association Naturschutzpark e.V. (VNP), founded in 1909, began as early as 1910 to protect heathland in today's nature reserve from development, afforestation or conversion to farmland. Within a short time, the VNP was able to buy up several large areas of heathland and some farms. In 1922, an area of around 21 square kilometers around the Wilseder Berg was placed under nature conservation. The nature reserve area was extended to around 23.4 square kilometers in 1993. Today, the VNP owns more than a third of the area of the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve.

1 € discount on admission to the Wilsede Heath Museum with the ErlebnisCard Lüneburg Heath.
