Seasonal natural highlights

Experience nature all year round

When is Niedersachsen’s nature at its most beautiful? Always!

In spring, when thousands of apple and cherry trees burst into blossom, the Altes Land transforms into an ethereal fairy-tale landscape adorned in white and soft pink.

In summer, Lüneburg Heath beckons with its rolling carpets of purple heather – perfect for leisurely walks or a romantic carriage ride through this floral wonderland. A brief, magical moment comes at dawn, when the last traces of the morning mist lift from the colourful splendour.

Autumn in Niedersachsen is all about bird migration. With a little luck, you’ll see thousands of cranes in the region’s moors and marshes. During the Migratory Bird Days along the North Sea coast, these frequent flyers can be observed at close range and discovered in fascinating detail.

Winter brings the joy of snowshoe walks, skiing and tobogganing in the Harz Mountains. Whether you prefer racing downhill on groomed slopes or ambling through the stillness of a winter forest of white-capped trees is entirely up to you.

The snowy white wonder of the moors

Cotton grass in bloom in Niedersachsen

From spring to early summer, the moorlands turn into a delicate sea of fluffy white tufts as the cotton grass comes into full bloom. This spectacle transforms Niedersachsen’s moors into enchanting landscapes that invite wonder and serenity.

You can experience this breathtaking sight at its best in the moors of the Emsland, the Teufelsmoor near Worpswede, the Tiester Bauernmoor, the Diepholz Moor Depression and the Pietzmoor in Lüneburg Heath.

An explosion of colour

Autumn in Niedersachsen

When the forests turn into a glowing mosaic of gold, orange and red, the autumn foliage offers the perfect season for nature lovers. This display is especially impressive in the Harz Mountains, where dense deciduous forests and impressive ridges offer spectacular views. Everywhere, the autumn light bathes the landscape in warm, rich tones. The contrast with the dark coniferous forests and rugged rock formations makes the colours even more vivid. The best time to experience the ‘Indian Summer’ of the North is from late September to mid-October.

Niedersachsen’s sweetest season

Apple harvest in the Altes Land

When apple trees bow under the weight of rosy-cheeked fruit, it’s harvest time in the Altes Land! From late August to October, this fruit-growing region becomes a paradise for food lovers.

Whether cycling past blooming farmsteads, picking apples at one of the many orchards, or sampling fresh varieties straight from the tree – here you can savour the harvest with all your senses. Particularly charming are the traditional fruit farms, complete with farm shops, apple cake and freshly pressed juice.

A trip to the Altes Land during the apple harvest is not only delicious, but also a true cultural experience – regional, seasonal and wonderfully northern German.
