You don’t need a car to get to the holiday destinations, cities and places of interest in Niedersachsen. You can find information about trains, tickets and regional offers here. You’ll also find details about airports in Niedersachsen, along with useful tips for those who are travelling by car. 

By train 

Travel by train for a relaxing journey – Niedersachsen has a well-developed rail network for both regional and long-distance travel. Most major cities are connected to Deutsche Bahn’s high-speed ICE network, and many holiday destinations can be reached by train. A total of 350 train stations and stops ensure a stress-free route to your holiday destination.  

Travelling with children:  

Bringing children on a long-distance journey? Up to four children can travel free of charge when accompanied by someone aged 15 or over – and they don’t even need to be related provided they’re included on the paying passenger’s ticket. More information is available here.

Affordable regional travel:  

With the Niedersachsen Ticket, up to five people can travel for an entire day across Niedersachsen, Bremen and Hamburg – making it ideal for discovering the region’s sights and attractions.

By car

If you’re arriving by car, Niedersachsen is easily accessible thanks to a well-connected road network. The A1 (northeast–southwest), A2 (east–west) and A7 (north–south) autobahns offer convenient access from all directions. 

Elbe river ferries:  

If you’re travelling from Hamburg or Schleswig-Holstein, you can take one of two car ferries across the River Elbe: 

For cyclists and pedestrians, there is also a ferry connection from Hamburg across the Elbe to the Alte Land region, ideal for day trips:

There are four international airports that offer flights to Niedersachsen. In addition, there are flight connections to several of the East Frisian Islands from the mainland.

Discover Niedersachsen with regional tourist coach services

A car isn’t essential to explore the natural landscapes of Niedersachsen. Many destinations offer special tourist coaches: The free Heide Shuttle, complete with bike trailer, takes you on exciting discovery tours through the Lüneburg Heath nature park. In East Frisia, the tourist coach stops at over 4,900 locations, offering an affordable way to reach the region’s top attractions. With the Harz Holiday Ticket (HATIX), you can also use local bus services free of charge throughout the Harz Mountains National Park area.
