Head for the hills

Unforgettable experiences at higher altitudes

Walking in Niedersachsen? Why not? Whether in the Harz Mountains National Park or the TERRA.vita Nature and UNESCO Geopark, both summit treks and long-distance hikes await.

The Weser Uplands, with the Deister and Süntel ranges, Ith and Hils hills, or the Solling-Vogler Nature Park in southern Niedersachsen, also call for laced-up walking boots and a sense of adventure. Prefer two wheels? You’ll find plenty of challenging routes here too. And in winter, the slopes offer excellent skiing and tobogganing.

Solling-Vogler Nature Park

In the Solling-Vogler Nature Park in the Weser Uplands at the southern edge of Niedersachsen, once-extinct species such as black storks and wildcats are back. A favourite among walkers: the expansive Mecklenbruch raised bog and an old Hutewald (grazed woodland where livestock roam freely beneath ancient trees), where gnarled oaks provide shade for roaming Exmoor ponies and Heck cattle. At night, wolves howl in the Neuhaus Wildlife Park.

Weser Uplands Nature Park

They grow in zigzags and are known as ‘witches’ wood’: the rare Süntel beeches are a botanical curiosity, flourishing in the Weser Uplands Nature Park. Six quality-certified German walking trails (Qualitätswege Wanderbares Deutschland) wind through the deep forests, past bizarre rock formations, offering views of enchanting castles and palaces, or following the picturesque course of the Weser river – the region’s namesake.

Looking for something gentler? In Münden Nature Park, orchards blanket the hillsides and peaceful valleys with buzzing meadows and babbling brooks invite leisurely cycling.

The Deister

The Deister ridge, southwest of Hanover, features several lookout towers that make for excellent stops. When snow falls, it’s also the perfect spot for sledging or cross-country skiing.

The Ith

In the Ith hills, nature lovers can stroll or cycle through shady woodlands of beech and oak. Dramatic rock formations rise up along the way, and in spring the air is filled with the heady scent of wild garlic.
