Lüneburg Heath

Discover the lively and fun side of the Lüneburg Heath region of Niedersachsen. This is one of the most popular regions in Europe, particularly in August and September, when the heather is in bloom and the countryside reveals its unique charm. This is when the vibrant mauve of millions of flowers and the green of the juniper bushes and pine trees light up the heaths, heralding the start of the perfect season for cyclists and hikers. Wagons and horse-drawn carriages trundle along the sandy paths, the grey-horned heath sheep graze on the heath and the fragrant smell of warm blossom lies over the entire region. Lüneburg Heath – the perfect place to experience and enjoy a unique landscape.

The region’s most popular destination when the heather is in bloom between 8 August and 9 September is the 23,440 hectare nature reserve of the Lüneburg Heath Nature Park, which is the largest interconnected area of heathland in Central Europe. No cars are allowed in the nature reserve, and the best way to explore this unique area is in a horse-drawn carriage, by bike or on foot.

The Lüneburg Heath is also well worth visiting outside of the heather blossom season. Did you know that there are more amusement, theme and animal parks in the Lüneburg Heath than anywhere else in Germany? This makes a visit to the Lüneburg Heath a fun adventure for young and old alike. Families with children can enjoy the unique natural surroundings, as well as an unrivalled choice of amusement and theme parks – two good reasons to enjoy an exhilarating holiday here in this region.

The historic towns of Lüneburg and Celle are both close to your holiday destination in the Lüneburg Heath; these attractive towns offer a wealth of sights and shops.
