Hildesheim

Hildesheim is best known for its churches, two of which – Hildesheim Cathedral and St. Michael's Church – bear witness to Romanesque-style religious art from the Holy Roman Empire in an extraordinary fashion. UNESCO acknowledged this by including St. Michael’s Church and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary in the World Heritage list in 1985. The two churches are home to an extraordinarily large collection of historic interior furnishings, offering a spectacular insight into traditional church design in the Roman Empire. The legendary Thousand-year Rose, which scales the apse of the cathedral, is also a head-turner. Visitors can find world-class art and historic cultural treasures in Hildesheim’s museums. The Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum in Hildesheim is most famous for its Ancient Egyptian collection. The Dommuseum (Cathedral Museum) is home to a selection of precious artefacts from various periods throughout the cathedral's history and houses the cathedral treasury, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
