The Weser is formed by the confluence of the Werra and Fulda rivers. All three rivers have cut deeply in to the colourful sandstone over thousands of years and are a characteristic feature of the Münden nature park. The scenic highlights also include the diversity of orchids in the brightly lit forests of Werratal.
The town of Hann. Münden, characterised by medieval half-timbered buildings, was declared by world traveller Alexander von Humboldt to be one of the seven most beautifully located towns in the world. Other highlights include the Bursfelde monastery, the Roman camp near Hedemünden and the bio-energy village Jühnde, Germany‘s first village, which is entirely supplied with heat and power from renewable biomass. Guided tours are offered.
Nature and fairy tale offers such as the „Frau-Holle-Pfad“, are especially interesting for families with children. Single or multi-day canoe trips on the Fulda, Werra and Weserrivers are recommended for active tourists. With the river always in sight, Weser Uplandsweg is recommended as a single or multi- day hike and the Weser cycle route for biking.
