Taking bikes on buses and ferries – need a ride?

Whether you want to dodge the weather or simply shorten your route, the various regions of Niedersachsen have just the ticket.

Cycle buses in Niedersachsen

Some regions of Niedersachsen have cycle buses which carry bikes on special trailers:

in the Altes Land holiday region on the Elbe river, the  Elbe-Radwanderbus runs on two lines. One line runs between Harsefeld and Balje, and the other runs from Buxtehude via Jork to Hamburg-Finkenwerder.

In the Elbe river landscape, the Elb-Shuttle runs between Hamburg-Bergedorf, Marschacht, Winsen (Luhe), Stelle and Seevetal.

In the Lüneburg Heath, the Regionalpark-Shuttle runs in the Rosengarten regional park, the Heide-Shuttle in the Lüneburg Heath nature park, and the Entdecker-Bus in the Uelzen region. There are free cycle bus offers in the Lüneburg Heath.

In the holiday region of Hanover, the cycle bus travels around Lake Steinhude.

In the County of Bentheim, cyclists can use the Grafschafter Fietsenbus.

In Emsland, the Emsland RADexpress runs on a total of seven lines.

In Osnabrücker Land, the FreizeitBus travels on four lines and takes bicycles free of charge.

Travelling by bike and ferry

It is easy to combine a bike and ferry tour in Niedersachsen. The following ferry lines will take you and your bike:

The Dollard passenger ferry travels between Emden, Ditzum and Delfzijl. The ferry service is also part of the “Internationale Dollard Route” cycle route.

The Weser fleet (Flotte Weser), in the Weser Uplands and on the Mittelweser, invites weary cyclists to travel on the Weser river for a bit, to rest their legs and refresh themselves with food and drink.

The Helgoline offers cyclists the opportunity to enjoy the Elbe from Hamburg to Cuxhaven from the ferry, thereby experiencing part of the Elberadweg from a different perspective.

Selected river crossings

The large rivers in Niedersachsen cannot always be crossed by car, but at some points there are passenger ferries which also carry bikes.

Here are some of the points where you can cross the Elbe river with your bike:

  • Glückstadt - Wischhafen
  • Lühe - Schulau
  • HADAG Hafenfähren

You can cross the Weser river at the following points:

  • Schweringen - Gandesbergen
  • Brake - Harriersand
  • Brake - Sandstedt
  • Nordenham - Bremerhaven

Note: the detailed information given by the providers is mostly only available in German. Please consult the current schedule in advance, since these are predominantly seasonal services.
