The asparagus museum occupies a 300-year-old Low German house in the Biedermeier Garden of the Nienburg/Weser Museum. Photos, original harvesting machines and asparagus knives are all used to illustrate the laborious job of cultivating asparagus and how the plant, which has many long roots, grows, as well as processing of the harvested vegetable, methods of preservation, its marketing and distribution. One section is devoted to seasonal work, which has always been closely associated with asparagus growing. Whereas relatives and neighbours traditionally lent a hand, prisoners of war were called upon to help with the harvest during the Second World War. After 1945, seasonal workers began to flow in every year from the Mediterranean countries and later from Poland.
