Visitors who prefer to delve into the history of the city on their own need only to follow the Rose Route. A trail of white painted roses guides the way to the main sights and places of historical interest in the old town centre of Hildesheim. Starting from the historic market square with “the world’s most beautiful half-timbered house”, the Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (the Butchers’ Guild Hall), the route passes through quaint shopping streets and tiny lanes of magnificent old houses to churches that are famed for their beauty. A multilingual guide providing information about the sights along the 5-km route and a special version for children are both available from the Tourist Office. Information about the buildings and squares, monuments and streets along the Rose Route can also be found in the Hildesheim audio guide, which not only gives listeners historical background, facts and figures, but also recounts anecdotes, stories and legends.
