Spiekeroog is famous for its idyllic atmosphere: narrow lanes, nostalgic cafés and restaurants, inspiring shops that one can browse at one’s leisure. The small streets take you past low Frisian cottages and the oldest island church in East Frisia, built at the end of the 17th century. The building style, which is typical for the island, has been lovingly preserved over the centuries. All new building projects and modernisation work are vetted to ensure that they blend in with the traditional charm of the island’s villages.
