An island of fascinating contrasts: in the west, an urbane, a cultural lifestyle dominates. The “Conversationshaus” in the middle of town is a venue for events and a key centre for visitors. The magnificent building, which for many years was called the Spa House, is one of the oldest listing buildings on the island.
The east of the island belongs wholly to unspoiled nature. Norderney offers a natural habitat for many endangered species of plants and animals. The island is authentic and untouched; it has gentle curves and rugged edges. A microcosm built on sand, ever-changing as it is buffeted by the tides, by storms and floods.
14 kilometres of the finest sandy beaches are perfect for sunbathing or long relaxing walks. Around 80 kilometres of cycle and hiking paths snake through and around the dunes, along pastures, past salt meadows and the tidal flats.
