Geese Girl - landmark of Göttingen on the market well in front of the old city hall

The smiling landmark of the university city of Göttingen, the Gänseliesel (geese girl)of the market fountain, is both modest and graceful. Actually just a poor girl protecting her geese, the art nouveau figure has long since been the favourite of all new doctoral graduates from the George August University Göttingen. Long ago making history as the most kissed girl in the world, every student who passes a doctorate exam must kiss her. Students took this liberty not long after the statue was erected in 1901. However, sensing a decline in morals, Göttingen’s strict councillors introduced a kissing ban in 1926, which is still in existence today. Nevertheless, the kissing continues – much to the delight of the people of Göttingen and tourists. The kissing ceremony is almost a daily occurrence at the end of the semester, when colourful processions of doctoral graduates from various faculties pay a visit to the Gänseliesel. After a daredevil climb, the Gänseliesel receives a kiss and a bunch of flowers from every graduate, cheered on by onlookers. A tradition for over 100 years.
