The most beautiful lighthouses in Niedersachsen

Towering proudly above the waves, weathering storms and telling tales of longing, safety and adventure – the lighthouses of Niedersachsen are far more than navigational aids. They are symbols of the North Sea’s beauty and power. 

Here are some of the most striking and picturesque lighthouses in Niedersachsen: 

1.  Pilsum Lighthouse

The Pilsum Lighthouse is one of Germany’s most recognisable and beloved lighthouses – thanks in no small part to its distinctive red and yellow stripes. It achieved cult status after appearing in films by the German comedian Otto Waalkes, especially Otto - Der Außerfriesische (Otto- The Alien from East Frisia). Since then, it has become a favourite destination and photo spot for film buffs. 

Height: 11 metres (one of the smaller lighthouses) 

Open to visitors? Yes, but only for guided tours or wedding ceremonies. 

2. Roter Sand Lighthouse

The Roter Sand Lighthouse (near Wangerooge) is a true legend among German lighthouses and was the first in the world to be built at sea. It stands as a technical marvel and a monument to engineering ingenuity. 

Height: 52.5 metres 

Open to visitors? Yes, but only via special tours.

3. Campen Lighthouse 

The Campen Lighthouse is an impressive structure and holds the title of Germany’s tallest lighthouse. Located near Emden at the mouth of the River Ems, its lattice design is reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower. Due to its open steel framework, it sways slightly in the wind. During the Second World War, it was deliberately blacked out for strategic reasons to hinder air raids. 

Height: 65.3 metres (Germany’s tallest lighthouse!) 

Open to visitors? Yes, it is open to visitors. After climbing 308 steps, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking 360° view over East Frisia, the River Ems and the Wadden Sea.

4. Norderney Lighthouse 

The Norderney Lighthouse – often called Cape Norderney – is one of the island’s most famous landmarks. Nestled in the dunes, it offers fantastic views over the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. For over 140 years, the tower has served as a vital beacon for ships navigating these waters. 

Height: 54 metres 

Open to visitors? Yes. After a 253-step climb, a stunning panoramic view awaits.

5. Obereversand Lighthouse 

Rising high on steel stilts, the Obereversand Lighthouse embodies a history of the wind, waves and maritime heritage. Once guiding ships along the Outer Weser river, it now stands proudly in Dorum-Neufeld as a museum and popular wedding venue. Climbing its 84 steps rewards visitors with sweeping views of the tidal flats and the North Sea.  

Height: approx. 35 metres 

Open to visitors? Yes, the lighthouse is open to visitors. A spiral staircase with 84 steps leads to a platform with spectacular North Sea views.
