About 6 km outside the town of Norderney, roughly in the middle of the island, the "Great Norderney Lighthouse" was built of brick between 1871 and 1874. The tower includes a keeper's house and engine house, which were built in the same period.
Originally, the beacon burned at a height of 54 meters with a five-wick kerosene lamp. Today, it shines with a Fresnel lens consisting of 1,018 prisms and 24 lenses and has a range of 21 nautical miles (approx. 39 km).
A special feature: the Norderney lighthouse is the only lighthouse on the German North Sea coast whose light turns to the left.
In the summer months, the lighthouse can be visited. After 254 steps, a breathtaking 360-degree view awaits visitors inside - the perfect reward for the climb.
