Electric lighthouse

Lighthouse

Round, red and white striped and in the middle of the dunes. Around 1890, however, the builders were less interested in creating the perfect holiday motif than in making night navigation in the area of the Ems estuary even safer. It has not been in operation for several years now.

The 27-metre-high electric lighthouse stands on the dune south of the centre of Borkum and can be easily reached from there by a 15-minute walk. On 11 August 2003, the responsible Emden Waterways and Shipping Authority extinguished the leading light because a sandbank is currently running through the fairway. The tower continues to serve the German-Dutch traffic safety system in the Ems estuary as a radar antenna support.
