Historic sites, ancient oak forests, floodplains and moors and, of course, the imposing megalithic tombs that give the trail its name: the Hünenweg in the Osnabrücker Land region really does have a lot of variety to offer. Since summer 2017, the route from Osnabrück to Hahnenmoor in Emsland has been even more relaxed and enjoyable, as the trail has been completely re-marked, refurbished and refreshed with additional rest areas and information boards.
The individual hiking stages in the old cultural landscape are even easier to follow, as distracting glances at a map or even a GPS device are no longer necessary.
The signposts guide you precisely to the huge granite boulders used by our Neolithic ancestors to build the megalithic tombs and to the numerous other interesting and astonishing sights from the present and the distant past.
It has recently become even easier to gain deep insights into rock strata that are around 150 million years old: the trail leads directly through a quarry in Bramsche-Ueffeln. Here, layers of rock are quarried that were formed in the Jurassic period, when this area was completely flooded and a coastal region.
