The birdlife at Lake Tankum is diverse and fascinating. Here we introduce you to the birds and their habitat.
Lake Tankum was created in 1976 during the construction of the Elbe Lateral Canal. Today, the Tankumsee is a popular bathing lake. The Tankumsee adventure world is a popular destination for recreational athletes and those seeking peace and quiet at any time of year.
The lake is located in the Aller-Urstromtal valley on the edge of the Barnbruchswiesen and Ilkerbruch nature reserves. This makes the Tankumsee a habitat for many birds.
Birds are among the most popular wild animals.
The birdlife at the Tankumsee is diverse and fascinating. Songbirds, woodland birds, waterfowl, birds of prey and migratory birds live here.
Many birds are native species such as tits, chaffinches, jays and woodpeckers. Others only visit us for part of the year, such as storks, cranes and wild geese. Some live by or on the water, such as ducks, swans and great crested grebes, while others live high up in the trees, such as magpies, crows and some species of owl.
The ornithological hiking trail leads around the Tankumsee. Numerous information boards along the trail invite you to get to know the birdlife around Lake Tankum. It's worth taking the time to listen and look closely! If you want to observe birds, you need patience.

2. Who lives here?
The exploration tour begins with getting to know the inhabitants of our nest box settlement. Here you can find out more about the lives and songs of the individual birds. On the tree signs under each nest box you will find a QR code that links to the species portraits of the birds on the NABU website.
3. Forest dwellers
The Tankumsee area is a very wooded area. Many birds live here that prefer a wooded area. If you want to find out more about the habits of forest birds, this is the right place for you.
4. Bats
Bats belong to the mammal family, but because they can fly like birds, we have dedicated an extra information board to them. The bats at Tankumsee have their roosting colonies high up in the trees. They like to use the bat boxes that have been hung up. They are nocturnal and therefore difficult to observe.
5. Waterfowl
Ducks, geese, swans, great crested grebes and coots are probably the most frequently observed waterfowl on the lake. Find out who else lives here here. Many of our water birds can be observed all year round.
6. Hunters of the skies
Red kites, falcons and buzzards circle high up in the sky. Sometimes even the white-tailed eagle pays a visit. Our native birds of prey are daring flying acrobats and skilled hunters.
7. Our guests
Wild geese, storks, cranes, ospreys - the water-rich landscape of Tankumsee, Barnbruchwiesen and Ilkerbruch provides food and is a breeding ground for many migratory birds.
8. Useful insects
Insects are the food source for many birds. A decline in insect diversity is therefore also detrimental to birdlife. Here you can find out what this is all about and how you can protect not only bees but also other insects. Equipment
- Binoculars are recommended.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
- Around the Tankumsee lake, there are many leisure activities and restaurants to enjoy.
Safety guidelines
- Cyclists, horse riders, joggers and walkers like to use paths and areas that are primarily used for agricultural and forestry purposes. This often leads to misunderstandings between recreationists and farmers and foresters. Observing simple rules of conduct can facilitate relaxed coexistence in fields and meadows. Please show consideration for each other!
