This 30-kilometer-long otter trail leads along the Ise
At five stations, the trail shows entertaining and interesting facts about the river structure, dragonflies, beavers and meadow birds.

A total of four otter trails invite you to experience the landscape from the perspective of an otter. The otter is a very rare and secretive animal. It reacts very sensitively to changes in its habitat. In other words, if streams, rivers, ponds and lakes are in a good ecological condition, they will sooner or later be colonized by otters as habitats. The otter has returned to the lowlands of the Ise, a small river in the district of Gifhorn, thanks to extensive nature conservation measures. Wild otters and their tracks have even been spotted near the Otter Center in Hankensbüttel.

The Otter Trails lead into these areas to raise awareness of otter habitats. A total of 24 stations equipped with steel otters invite visitors to learn about the life of the water otter and nature conservation directly on site.

Further information on the otter trails and an accompanying brochure are available from the Otter-Zentrum.

Directions

The Otter Trail starts at Neudorf-Platendorf railroad station. First head east along Bahnhofstraße. Continue left on Dorfstraße. After the end of the village, continue straight on, past the crossroads and only after about 2 km at
a crossroads with the red "junction 40" turn left into the forest. At the end of the path, turn left, continue to the end and turn right. When crossing the stream, keep right on the path and follow the left-hand bend towards the bridge
with station 1. (Station 1)
Heading west over the railroad tracks and then over the country road, a dirt road leads to a gravel quarry. At the crossroads, take the second road half left.
After the bridge over the Beberbach, turn left. Take the path south and follow the left-hand bend over the Beberbach again. At the crossroads turn right and continue to the next crossroads where you turn right again. (Station 2)
Continue west and follow the right-hand bend. Ride through the forest for approx. 800 m and at the four-way intersection, turn left to the southwest
. At the end of the path, turn left and then immediately right again. Turn left at the next crossroads and after some distance, immediately after crossing a ditch, the Heestenmoorkanal, turn left towards the Ise. (Station 3)
The route goes back a little way to the bird information board, where you have to turn left. Continue south for a longer distance. Turn left at a three-way intersection close to the village. At the bend to the right, turn left onto a grassy path to the Ise. (Station 4)
Continue towards the village. Before you reach the village, turn left along a grassy-sandy path that joins a small tarred road. At the next crossroads, turn left across the Ise and along the edge of the forest. When the narrow tarred road continues in a right-hand bend, go straight on into the field path. Continue straight on back to the starting point. After approx. 900 m, before the start of the wood, turn right onto the path, then immediately left at the end and then right again. Before the village, carefully cross the railroad tracks and follow the left-hand bend to the station. (Station 5)

Safety guidelines

The tour also runs partly on field and forest paths, so appropriate riding technique is required.
Bicyclists, horse riders, joggers and walkers like to use paths and areas that are primarily used for agricultural and forestry purposes. This often leads to misunderstandings between recreational users and farmers. Observing simple rules of conduct can facilitate relaxed coexistence in fields and meadows. Please show consideration for one another!
