The approximately 3.5-kilometre circular trail in the rural Gifhorn district of Winkel leads through a diverse landscape of flat areas and flat hills formed by the Ice Age. The hills were formed from river-side dunes of the Aller glacial valley from the post-glacial period, the plains from former low terraces from the interglacial period.
The old village center of Winkel is located on such a low terrace, the newer residential areas were largely built into the dune landscape. The plains are now used as fields, the wetter areas as meadows and pastures. In the hollows, there are small areas of moorland overgrown with shrubs, the so-called Moorschlatts.
In earlier times, the dunes were covered by heather, but with the decline of heather sheep farming, this was largely replaced by pine forests.
Along the circular hiking trail, the existing vegetation is described on 15 text and display boards, thus pointing out the functions of the forest and special features of this unique landscape.
The hiking trail "In the footsteps of Hermann Löns" runs partly along the Gifhorn-Winkel nature trail.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
- The circular route to the heather blossom in August/September is particularly beautiful.
Nearby: Gifhorn Mill Museum, Stadtzentrum Gifhorn and Restaurants and cafés in and around Gifhorn Safety guidelines
- Cyclists, horse riders, joggers and walkers like to use paths and areas that are primarily used for agricultural and forestry purposes. This often leads to misunderstandings between recreationists and farmers. Observing simple rules of conduct can facilitate relaxed coexistence in fields and meadows. Please show consideration for one another!
