The Worpswede Kunsthalle is one of the most traditional museums in the town. Already in the early days of the artists' colony, the master bookbinder Friedrich Netzel began to make his premises available to young artists for exhibition purposes. His son Friedrich built a new house at the present location at Bergstraße 17, which he operated as a gallery and art trade.
In addition to selling paintings, the Netzel family began early on to accumulate a basic stock of works by the founding generation. Since then, art has always been collected, so that today the Worpswede Kunsthalle has probably the most important overview collection of the art history of the town and can show it in changing exhibitions.
In addition to its own extensive collection of Worpswede art of all generations, contemporary as well as international art and handicrafts are also shown in special exhibitions.
