The star in Emsland

In the mid-18th century, Elector Clemens August had his hunting lodge built by Johann Conrad Schlaun close to nature and surrounded by extensive forests. The star architect of the time created a star-shaped baroque complex of unique grace, which has been almost completely preserved along with its furnishings. The small but extremely magnificent palace with French silk wallpaper, Flemish tapestries, precious furniture, paintings and copper engravings is enthroned in the center. Exhibitions from the Emsland Museum can be seen in some of the eight pavilions around the magnificent central building. During the winter months, the museum is only open for events. The themes here include baroque hunting, Clemens August and the Teutonic Order, porcelain, Strasbourg faience and modern contemporary ceramics. One of the pavilions also houses the small but magnificently furnished palace chapel, which is part of the Capuchin monastery that is still active.

The small monastery garden behind the chapel is the most charming part of the 42-hectare palace park. Formally trimmed taxus hedges give structure to the grounds, sundials mark the most beautiful places to linger and the "Gloriette", the garden house of Elector Clemens August, is the beautiful highlight of the tour.
