Steep with a twist

Admittedly, this Ebersnacken tower wants to be fought for. In other words, good basic fitness and sturdy footwear are required for this hike, which often takes place in steep terrain. Both wider gravel paths and narrow natural trails lead you up to the ridge and finally to the highest peak of the Vogler at 460 m above sea level, the Ebersnacken. The Ebersnacken tower itself is 26 m high, and climbing it promises another small adventure. The view from the very top is fabulous and on clear days reaches as far as the Brocken in the Harz or the Hermannsdenkmal in the Teutoburg Forest. And on windy days, you can feel how the wooden tower gently sways with the wind above the treetops of the wild Vogler.

From the sports field in Holenberg, you hike directly into the forest. For about 1,800 m you move slightly uphill and downhill, mostly on wide gravel paths in the lower slope areas of the Vogler. After crossing a bridge, turn left into the Hüttebachtal. You hike along natural meadows until you reach a path that leads slightly uphill from the left valley to the right towards the forest. Here begins a good 2 km long ascent to the Ebersnacken, first continuing on a gravel path, then on forest trails. Shortly before the summit, you meet the Weserbergland trail, which your hike now runs parallel to. After about 200 m, you reach the highest point in the Vogler, the 460 m high Ebersnacken. From the 26 m high Ebersnacken tower, you have a great panoramic view. The hiking route then descends. You walk about 600 m on the Vogler ridge trail, then turn right and descend on forest trails to Holenberg. Shortly before reaching the village, you have a great view into the distance to the Holzberg. In Holenberg, turn right. On meadow paths and past a rest area, you reach your starting point at the sports field in Holenberg.

Directions

The hiking route starts at the sports field in Holenberg, where you can also park. Initially, you walk slightly uphill on an asphalt road. Soon a path branches off to the right; you continue straight ahead. Later, the asphalt road turns into a gravel path leading into the forest. After about 300 m in the forest, you reach a fork in the path.

In front of you lies the 302 m high Weinberg, located in the middle of a nature reserve. The Weinberg historically belonged to the Amelungsborn monastery. It is characterized by calcareous dry grasslands on shallow Muschelkalk bedrock on the slopes and calcareous beech forest on the summit. On the grassland areas, which are maintained by sheep grazing, numerous gentians and orchids grow; orchids can also be found in the beech forest. First keep to the right to continue a few meters straight ahead or slightly to the left.

Follow the still gravelled path straight ahead for about 1.5 km. You then come to a bridge, behind which you immediately turn left into the dreamlike Hüttebachtal. You have to cross the stream twice at small fords. You hike along natural meadows until you reach a path that leads slightly uphill from the valley on the left to the forest on the right. Now turn right.

About 500 m further, you come to a crossroads; here, continue uphill to the right. Shortly after the turn, admire an oak tree at least 300 years old. After a few meters, you leave the forest road; to the left, you use a short concrete driveway, which then becomes a forest path. Here begins the steep, almost 1.5 km long ascent to the Ebersnacken. In the last part, you pass through a bright beech forest that opens the view to the Ebersnacken tower.

Shortly before the summit, you meet the Weserbergland trail, to which the quality route now runs parallel. After about 200 m you reach the highest point in the Vogler, the 460 m high Ebersnacken. A shelter and the 26 m high Ebersnacken tower invite you to an extended rest with food from your backpack and an excellent panoramic view.

Then it goes downhill. You hike about 600 m on the Vogler ridge trail, then turn right onto a forest path that initially runs flat along the slope and then ascends crossing a ridge. Your path continues together with the Weserbergland trail, relatively steeply downhill into the Holenberg forest valley. There, you reach a well-developed forest road, which you cross. Keep going downhill.

After about 800 m, after making a wide bend to the right, you exit the forest. At this point, you have a great view of the village of Holenberg and the Holzberg further in the distance. You can take a short break on a bench before you continue downhill towards the village.

After about 250 m, you reach a junction in Holenberg. Turn right here. About 100 m later, you leave the village; the asphalt road turns into a meadow path. You walk parallel to the slope, slightly downhill past a monument. In a sharp left curve, you pass a larger rest area located on the right side. After another 100 m downhill, turn left onto the asphalt road. After a few meters, you reach your starting point at the sports field in Holenberg.
