The short eight-kilometre circular trail around the two Kellenberge mountains links two quarries of varying degrees of excitement - the Kleiner Kellenberg rises 145 meters, the Großer Kellenberg more than 210 meters. Around 100 years ago, stone was quarried from both for house and road construction. In the process, workers in the Barkhausen district of Bad Essen discovered fossilized tracks of at least eleven different dinosaurs. Life-size replicas show what the animals looked like. Information boards from the TERRA.vita Nature and UNESCO Geopark explain why the footprints survived millions of years in the once soft seashore, making it possible to experience a particularly exciting chapter of the Earth's history.
Traces of the former work can no longer be seen at the second former quarry with the best will in the world. This is because the Dücke-Mühlenbach stream plunges five meters into the abandoned pit and feeds the Green Lake. It owes its unmistakable turquoise shimmer to dissolved minerals.
The paths between the two quarries lead through wonderful, wooded natural landscapes and to a particularly beautiful vantage point that offers an unobstructed view of the neighboring municipality of Melle.
A detailed description can be found in the Tour planner from the TERRA.vita Nature and Geopark.
