In East Frisia, the flat and wide landscape, adorned with fen canals and windmills, awaits you. The route takes you from the green inland to the beautiful coast.

The Ostfriesland hiking trail is the oldest and longest hiking trail in East Friesland and runs along an old railway line. The 24 artistically designed Scheuerpfahl sculptures that line the trail are a special hiking experience. The trail leads right across East Frisia: you hike from the green inland to the coast in Bensersiel. You can expect flat, wide landscapes, black and white cows grazing in pastures, Fehn canals with white bascule bridges and gallery holländer that have been converted into cafés.

Highlights:

  1. The Fehn and Shipping Museum on the "German Fehn Route" is located in a beautiful Art Nouveau villa. The permanent collection focuses on the Fehn culture, shipbuilding and shipping.
  2. The town hall in Leer was built in the German-Dutch Renaissance style between 1889 and 1894 in the heart of Leer's old town, directly opposite the weigh house at the harbor. The building is not only worth seeing from the outside, inside you will also find beautiful wall and ceiling paintings and a magnificent ballroom. The Stikelkamp estate lies in the middle of 59 hectares of woodland and is surrounded by a park with rare trees. The manor house, which dates back to around 1400, is probably the only remaining monastic building in East Frisia. (Advance booking is requested.)
  3. Experiencing energy with excitement and joy - that is the focus of the Energy, Education and Experience Center (EEZ) in Aurich. On 1,600 square meters, seven themed areas make scientific phenomena tangible with impressive exhibits and hands-on stations.
  4. Between Sandhorst and Plaggenburg you cross the "East Frisian Equator". The position was determined by the land registry office in Aurich in 1974 and marked by an archway. In the Wattenhuus in Esens-Bensersiel, you can explore the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Here you can learn all about the natural and animal secrets of the unique national park "on dry land".
