The Jade Trail takes you from Wilhelmshaven to the Jade Bay in the colorful Ammerland region. There you almost circle the Zwischenahner Meer and hike all the way to Oldenburg.

The Jade Trail is named after the small river Jade, which collects the surface water between the marsh and geest landscapes and connects the Jade Bay with the North Sea.

Your hike begins at the Jade Bay, the bay to the North Sea and part of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. Varied landscapes await you on the hike through Geest and Marsch, crossing East Frisian settlements. The hike takes you through the Neuenburg primeval forest, which has been a nature reserve for 100 years and is lined with 800-year-old trees. One stop you should not miss is the Zwischenahner Meer. In the heart of the Ammerland, colorful rhododendrons invite you to linger.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

  1. The Wadden Sea Visitor Center is all about the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is one of the last pristine natural landscapes in Central Europe. There are various exhibitions where you can experience more of this fascinating landscape.
  2. The Neuchâtel primeval forest is characterized by oak trees up to 800 years old. The forest has hardly been touched by humans since the 17th century. A hunting lodge offers a great place to rest or take shelter in "bad weather".
  3. Around 1500, Steinhausen was a small village whose inhabitants made a living from fishing and coastal shipping. If you come up the old, clinker-paved village street, you will come across the "Spritzenhaus" shipping monument in Bockhorn, whose characteristic ship shape is a reminder of times gone by.
  4. On the 250-hectare grounds of Klosterhof Jührden, there is an 18-hole swing golf course and a milking parlor. The farm invites you to linger over a cool milkshake.
  5. The Zwischenahner Meer, also known as the "Pearl of the Ammerland", nestled in a beautiful natural landscape, is the third largest inland lake in Lower Saxony and a popular destination for visitors from near and far.
  6. In the Park of Gardens in Bad Zwischenahn, 90 model gardens, plant collections and spring and summer bloomers in the Flower Ribbon offer a fascinating insight into the art of gardening and plenty of inspiration.
