The East Frisia hiking trail is the oldest and longest hiking trail in East Frisia and follows an old narrow-gauge railway line. A special hiking experience is offered by the 24 artistically designed barn post sculptures that line the path. The trail leads across East Frisia: you hike from the green inland to the coast in Bensersiel. You can expect flat, wide landscapes, black and white cows grazing on pastures, fen canals with white drawbridges, and gallery windmills that have been converted into cafés.

You cross train stations along the hiking trail in Papenburg, Leer, and Esens. At the endpoint in Bensersiel, you have the opportunity to take the ferry to the island of Langeoog. With a spa and guest card, you also have the opportunity to explore the East Frisian peninsula crisscross for only 2.00 € per person/one way. For hikers from Papenburg. Unfortunately, public transport is only available to a limited extent. The bus ride from Papenburg to Rhauderfehn takes about 1 hour. We recommend starting the East Frisia hiking trail in Leer.

Highlights:
- The Fen and Shipping Museum on the "German Fen Route" is located in a beautiful Art Nouveau villa. The permanent collection focuses on fen culture, shipbuilding, and shipping.
- The town hall in Leer was built in the German-Dutch Renaissance style between 1889 and 1894 in the heart of Leer's old town, directly opposite the weigh house at the harbor. The building is worth seeing not only from the outside; inside, there are beautiful wall and ceiling paintings and a magnificent ceremonial hall.
- Gut Stikelkamp is located in the middle of a 59-hectare forest and is surrounded by a park with rare trees. The residential building, dating from around 1400 and still preserved, is probably the only existing monastic building in East Frisia. (Advance registration is requested.)
- Experience energy with excitement and joy – this is the focus of the Energy, Education, and Experience Center (EEZ) in Aurich. On 1,600 square meters, seven thematic areas make scientific phenomena tangible through impressive exhibits and hands-on stations.
- Between Sandhorst and Plaggenburg, you cross the "East Frisia Equator." The location was determined in 1974 by the cadastre office in Aurich and marked by a gateway.
- At the Wattenhuus in Esens-Bensersiel, you can explore the World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea. Here, you learn "dry-footed" everything about the nature and animal secrets of this unique national park.
