Finding traces of the county in Uelsen and Halle-Hesingen

The area around Uelsen is fascinating in many ways. It consists largely of gravel and sandy soils, is very hilly in places, interspersed with forests and meadows and strongly influenced by the last ice age. In addition, numerous archaeological finds have shown that the first people lived in this area as early as the Stone and Bronze Ages. In 1840, for example, a golden cup was found on Spöllberg, north-east of Uelsen, which could be dated to the Bronze Age. The cup is still considered to be the oldest gold vessel ever found in Europe.
Visitors can experience the Bronze Age hands-on at the Bronzezeithof Uelsen. It was built according to archaeological knowledge and offers an authentic glimpse into the past. Other historical highlights include the four old mills in and around Uelsen. The oldest of the mills is the Schoneveld Mill in Wilsum, which was probably built as early as the 13th century.
