Finding traces of the county in Nordhorn

On this route, you walk through the town center of Nordhorn and gain an insight into the local textile history. The textile industry began here in 1939, when the first mechanical weaving mill opened. The town developed into one of the largest textile centers in Germany. The population rose from 2,540 (1903) to 48,000 (1950s and 1970s). In 1956, more than 11,500 people worked in the textile companies. Since the 1970s, however, the textile industry has suffered from structural change and the global oil and energy crisis. First the Nordhorn textile factory Povel, then NINO and finally Rawe filed for bankruptcy. In the mid-1990s, the new urban quarter Wasserstadt Povel was built where the extensive Povel factory site once stood. The restoration of this approximately 18-hectare brownfield site had kept the city busy for many years. However, the transformation of the heavily contaminated factory site into an urban residential area was successful and became a model for many urban planners. If you would like to find out more about Nordhorn's textile history, you can visit the converted water tower on the old Povel factory site. Another highlight is the old NINO building. Be sure to take a look!
