Although there are many sights to discover on this route, the numerous beautiful landscape views form the actual highlight of the route. Along the way, you often feel as if you are traveling all alone. The route leads over well-ridable, almost entirely asphalted roads, mostly used for agriculture and therefore extremely low in traffic. This way, the passing landscape scenes, Aper Tief, Howiek water mill, Park of Gardens, and Zwischenahner Meer can be fully enjoyed.
Highlights:
- The St. Nicolai Church in Apen from the 13th century is dedicated to St. Nicholas, who is venerated as the patron saint of sailors. This reflects Apen's former importance as a ship and trading place.
- Agricultural Museum Behlen: In Lindernerfeld you pass by the private "Agricultural Museum Behlen," which is worth a visit.
- Park of Gardens in Bad Zwischenahn-Rostrup: The largest show garden complex in Germany with over 90 themed gardens and plant collections forms the showcase of the Ammerland tree nurseries.
- The Howiek water mill was built in 1608. Notable is the half-timbered building with a hip and tile roof. The mill was driven by an undershot water wheel.
- Karlshofer bathing lake in Westerstede-Ocholt: On warm days, the ideal place for a relaxed swim in an idyllic small lake.
- The Aper Tief nature reserve is the largest tidal watercourse in the Ammerland with direct access to the North Sea. This wetland and floodplain area, newly created in 2005 in Hengstforde, fascinates with its daily changing features.
