In northwestern Germany, near the North Sea coast and bordering the Netherlands, runs the 173 km long cycling circular route of the "Deutsche Fehnroute".

The Deutsche Fehnroute not only has a sonorous name but is also one of the best-known cycling routes in northern Germany. It runs over 173 km through the unique Fehn region in Germany. The name “Fehn” is derived from the Dutch “Veen,” which means “moor.” Places ending in “fehn” indicate a precisely established cultivation method according to which the raised moors have been developed since the 17th century for peat extraction and later reclaimed. Long canals and side canals, so-called Wieken, white drawbridges, windmills, and brick houses bear witness to this interesting past and are ubiquitous in all Fehn communities.
