The town of Duingen, located in the Leinebergland joint municipality, has a population of approximately 5,200. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the majority of Duingen’s residents made their living from pottery. Duingen was located in the heart of the so-called “Pottland,” a region between Alfeld and Springe where particularly high-quality clay could be mined close to the surface. Thanks to these favorable conditions, numerous important pottery workshops were established in and around Duingen. Today, the pottery tradition is commemorated by, among other things, the historic pottery kiln in Coppengrave and the Pottery Museum in Duingen.
The 10.6-kilometer hike from the Alter Teichsweg parking lot near the Duingen indoor swimming pool offers spectacular views. The trail leads along the Duinger Berg to Coppengrave. Views into the distance and of the Lübbrechtsen quarry area are sure to set your heart racing. The highlight of the tour is the Leineberglandbalkon on Duinger Berg. This is the perfect spot for a leisurely picnic with an impressive view of the Külftal valley, and other rest areas invite you to linger. After the tour, hikers can relax at the Duingen indoor pool, which features an attached Pottland sauna.

- One possible starting point for the loop trail is the Alter Teichsweg hiking parking lot near Duingen. From there, the trail first leads up the Duinger Berg to the Leineberglandbalkon, which is definitely a highlight of the tour. From the Leineberglandbalkon—an open-air hiking shelter that invites you to linger and have a picnic—you’ll enjoy a fantastic view of the Külftal valley and, on a clear day, as far as Hanover and the Brocken in the Harz Mountains. On the steeply sloping northeastern flank of the Duinger Berg, mostly hidden in the forest, there are several limestone cliffs and limestone quarries. The trail continues first along paths on the ridge of the Duinger Berg and then downhill to Coppengrave. From there, it heads back to the starting point in Duingen; here, too, the forest edge offers beautiful views of the Duinger Forest.

- Getting thereFrom the direction of Hanover:
Coming from the north, take Exit 59 (B443/Laatzen) off the A7 and merge toward Pattensen/Sarstedt. Then continue on the B3 to the Eime exit, and continue toward Marienhagen to Duingen.
From Göttingen:
Coming from the south, take Exit 69 (Northeim-Nord) off the A7 onto the B3 toward Hameln/Einbeck/Alfeld (L.). Continue on the B3 to the Delligsen exit, then follow the signs toward Coppengrave to Duingen.

- The region between Alfeld and Springe on the Deister has been called Pottland since time immemorial. This area was home to the most important pottery workshops in northern Germany because particularly high-quality clays were found close to the surface. This allowed numerous potters to produce stoneware—a particularly sturdy and watertight type of ceramic—as early as the late Middle Ages. Thus, the most important center of pottery in Lower Saxony developed here: Pottland.
In Duingen, for example, 41 potters were working in 38 workshops in 1689.
