The original building was erected around 1400. At the beginning of the 17th century, it was rebuilt in the Weser Renaissance style. The town hall was given an elaborate and colourful ornamental façade, representing the power and wealth of the city at that time.
With its magnificent portal, the three dwarf houses and the two-storey oriel, the so-called "Utlucht", on the north front, the town hall forms a contrast to the plain-looking Guelph castle. Today, the town hall houses the registry office and the tourist information office.
Inside there are two halls, one above the other. In the 1920s, the lower town hall was decorated with murals depicting the town's history. On the wall of the building, numerous level marks recall past floods. The "Maß-Elle" next to the north portal bears witness to the colourful market hustle and bustle on the town hall square.
