Town hall
Historical building

The Old Town Hall with the Gänselieselbrunnen fountain in the city center is a highlight in Göttingen!

The Old Town Hall on the market square was originally built in 1270 as a multi-purpose building in which council and court meetings were held, but where trade was also conducted.

Between 1369 and 1443, extensions were added to the town hall, including the charming Gothic town hall arbour.

At that time, it was essentially given its current appearance. At the end of the 19th century (1884-1886), it was rebuilt again and the town hall was given the wall design it still has today.

The medieval Dorntze with its fully preserved Gothic heating system is worth seeing. Today it serves as a wedding room and can be visited as part of a guided tour of the town. The former prison is located in the basement. The offices now house the Göttingen Tourismus office.

In addition, the Old Town Hall is now a meeting place: receptions and cultural events take place in the large hall. Changing art exhibitions are shown in the exhibition rooms on the upper floor.
