The raised bog with its birdlife is an unforgettable experience at any time of year

Together with the Ekelmoor, the Tister Bauernmoor is the second largest nature conservation complex in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) with an area of 1,220 ha.

The moor becomes a resting and roosting place for large flocks of geese, lapwings and other "travellers", especially the crane, especially during the bird migration period in spring and autumn. The moor is also a year-round breeding ground and habitat for 43 bird species, including the white-tailed eagle, tree falcon and marsh harrier. You can explore the raised bog either on foot or with a bog railway (please note: travel times) or you can combine the two.

The following is an overview of the nature experience offers in the Tister Bauernmoor:

House of Nature
The House of Nature is located directly at the car park. It houses seminar and administration rooms, sanitary facilities and a café. The premises can be booked for events and seminars.

Burgsittensen moor railway
The small railway station is also located at the Haus der Natur, from where the small moor railway, a historic peat railway, departs. It runs on Sundays and public holidays between April and December. Rides are also available for groups outside of train times by prior arrangement.
On the approx. 90-minute journey, there are numerous stops and information about the moorland. The destination of the trip is the 6.50 metre-high observation tower and the barrier-free viewing platform, which offer a fantastic view of the rewetted area. For more information, visit www.moorbahn.de

Walking trail with moor experience zone
From the car park, a beautifully laid out, approximately 1.6 km long hiking trail leads to the observation tower and viewing platform. Along the way, beautiful places invite you to linger. The main trail is accompanied by information stations and information boards with everything you need to know about the moor. Small adventure stations also encourage you to discover the moor with all your senses.

Observation tower and barrier-free viewing platform
From the 6.50 m high observation tower and the barrier-free viewing platform, you can observe numerous birds all year round and migratory birds in spring and autumn.

Migratory birds, such as cranes, commute back and forth between their wintering grounds in southern climes and their breeding grounds in northern Europe. As the flight is exhausting, they stop for a rest in the Tister Bauernmoor, among other places. During the day, they fly to the surrounding fields to feed and at dusk they fly back to their roosting sites, including rewetted moors such as the Tister Bauernmoor.

School lessons on site
In consultation with schools and the Moorbahn Burgsittensen e.V. association, the area can be used for school lessons or project days. Guided tours can also be booked with expert staff from the moor railway association. You can find more information at www.moorbahn.de

Accessibility

General Information on Accessibility
Guests with limited mobility can experience the nature reserve on the moor railway. This runs from April to December on Sundays and public holidays (for exact departure times, see www.moorbahn.de).

Wheelchair users should register in advance so that the wagon of the small railway can be adapted accordingly.

The journey from the station and back takes approx. 90 minutes. The destination and highlight of the tour is the wheelchair-accessible and covered viewing platform in the middle of the raised bog, which can be reached via a ramp and a wooden footbridge. There is also a wheelchair-accessible toilet at the station of the small peat railway.

Directions & Parking facilities

Tiste is located to the east of Sittensen. The nature reserve car park is located at the end of the village, on the L 142 in the direction of Tostedt, directly in front of the Burgsittensen moor railway station building.

By car:
The best way to reach Sittensen from Bremen and Hamburg is via the A1 motorway (exit Sittensen). From there, simply follow the signs for "Sittensen".
From Bremervörde you can reach Sittensen via Zeven. Coming from Rotenburg (Wümme), drive via Scheeßel, Helvesiek and Hamersen.
