Built in 1542, the former mill with its impressive undershot mill wheel is one of ten water mills in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme). Thanks to the large mill pond and its tributary, the Bade, which is constantly fed by moorland, the mill could once be operated all year round.
In the last century, there was a conflict of interest between the miller and some farmers living upstream of the Bade. The latter dammed up the stream to temporarily flood their meadows, which considerably restricted operations. After lengthy legal proceedings, the miller was awarded sole damming rights in the Bade area and the farmers had to remove their weirs again.
In 1945, the former wooden bridge over the mill weir was blown up by German soldiers. The water wheel and weir were also destroyed in the process. It was not until 1953 that the mill weir and the bridge over it were rebuilt. In 1995, a new water wheel was installed on the mill and the mill was restored to working order.
There is a very nice rest area at the mill with a view of the mill pond. The mill can also be visited by appointment and is a special wedding venue for anyone who wants to say "I do".
