The purchasing decisions were made from the outset with artistic quality in mind. Illustrating the essence or social significance of work in the sense of a given or sought-after world view with artistic works was always out of the question.

The collection - defined as a collection of motifs - brings together works on the following themes: the workplace; the working person; traces of work in landscape and society such as tool(s).

In etchings, woodcuts, drawings, photographs, watercolors and paintings, the city of Salzgitter concentrates a subtle collection of over 1,000 artistic works on the broad theme of work, ranging from "classical modernism" to works by contemporary artists.

In addition to its artistic richness, the collection documents the constant change in our world of work in a way that is both striking and vivid.
