Saint Nicholas is one of the most revered saints in Russia and is regarded as a miracle worker and patron saint by sailors, tailors and weavers. The high tower of the wooden church is open to the top. This gives the impression of being in a cathedral rather than a small village church. The stepped church has partially gilded domes and consists of mighty beams up to twelve meters long. Over 400 cubic meters of the best larch wood have been used.
In the basement of the church, there is an exhibition of showpieces from the Moscow Patriarchate's manufactory: Icons, oil lamps and candlesticks, vestments and embroidery, cups, baptismal vessels, Bibles and other liturgical items for church services and church holidays. Numerous valuable icon paintings - in the Orthodox Church it is the painted word of the Holy Scriptures - adorn the walls of the church.
The charm of the church is characterized above all by the artwork of Sister Krstana. As an art historian, she worked for years in the Mill Museum and painted icons. Between May and September, she paints live in the church. As part of a guided tour (registration required), you can learn interesting and exciting facts about icon painting, sacred art and Russian Orthodoxy.
