Gifhorn Castle with historical museum and castle chapel
The Welfenschloss Gifhorn dates back to the Renaissance period and served as the residence of Duke Franz von Braunschweig and Lüneburg. The castle houses the Historical Museum with exhibits on prehistory and early history as well as urban development and natural history. The castle chapel is always worth a visit.

Duke Franz of Brunswick and Lüneburg, a pioneer of Protestantism, resided in the Guelph castle in Gifhorn from 1539 to 1549. He had a castle chapel built in 1547. It was one of the first sacred buildings in northern Germany to be built specifically for Protestant worship.

The castle chapel can be visited as part of a visit to the Historical Museum in the castle.

Exhibition in the Historical Museum

A central theme of the exhibition is the history of the Gifhorn Guelph Castle. Fragments of noble glassware, expensive ceramics and magnificent stove tiles convey an impression of the courtly splendor of the time.
The museum, which is divided into five sections, gives visitors an insight into the historical development of Südheide Gifhorn from prehistoric times to the present day. The prehistoric collections show the transition of man's way of life from nomadic hunter-gatherers to sedentary farmers. The emergence and development of urban settlements using the example of Gifhorn are presented in the urban history section. Three ways of living, living and working, which are particularly characteristic of the 19th and 20th centuries, give an impression of the social changes that were set in motion by the industrialization process.

The "Animal and Landscape" museum section is housed in the attic of the Kommandantenhaus. Numerous fossils provide information about the development of the earth and its creatures in general and the landscape of this region in particular. The fauna of this region is presented in vividly designed showcases with numerous specimens.

A wooden bridge leads across the moat to the castle lake.
