Cathedral
Church
St. Blasii Cathedral in Brunswick was built by Henry the Lion  (1129-1195), Duke of Saxony and Bavaria, as a memorial to him and its main features still date from this period. It is one of the most outstanding cathedrals in Germany.
St. Blasii Cathedral in Brunswick was founded by Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria (d. 1195) after a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Since the death of his wife, the English king's daughter Mathilde, it has been the burial place of the Guelph dynasty.
With its Romanesque works of art (Marian altar, seven-armed candelabrum, Imervard cross, murals), the basilica is one of the most outstanding churches in Germany. With the introduction of the Reformation, the cathedral became a ducal court and cathedral church. After the turmoil of the disputes between state and church in the first third of the last century and the misuse of the cathedral as a National Socialist place of worship, the cathedral foundation has been the owner and sponsor of the church and cultural work since the "cathedral settlement of 1954" between the state of Lower Saxony and the Braunschweig regional church.
Braunschweig Cathedral is the episcopal church of the Evangelical Lutheran regional church in Braunschweig. As a city church and home to the Braunschweig Cathedral Singing School, it has supra-regional appeal.
