Since 1975, the industrial and working-class city of Salzgitter has been collecting works of art dating from the early 20th century that focus on the ever-present theme of “work.”

From the very beginning, acquisition decisions were made with artistic quality in mind. There was never any question of using works of art to illustrate the nature or social significance of work in terms of a predetermined or sought-after worldview.

The collection—defined as a collection of motifs—brings together works on the themes of the workplace; the working person; traces of labor in the landscape and society; and tools.

Thus, the city of Salzgitter has assembled a collection of etchings, woodcuts, drawings, photographs, watercolors, and paintings—a subtle collection of over 1,000 artistic works on the broad theme of work, ranging from “classical modernism” to works by contemporary artists.

In addition to its artistic richness, the collection documents—in a manner that is both poignant and vivid—the constant transformation of our working world.
