The Pied Piper House is one of the most famous buildings in the Old Town of Hameln. It represents one of the most splendid constructions of the Weser Renaissance style. The building is located at the junction of Bungelosenstraße and Osterstraße. The Pied Piper House was built in 1602/1603 by the master builders Johann Hundertossen or Eberhard Wilkening for the Hameln city councilor Hermann Arendes. The house has been referred to as the Pied Piper House since around 1900. Its name is based on an inscription in a wooden beam on the side of the house facing Bungelosenstraße. This inscription recounts the exodus of the children of Hameln following the Pied Piper on June 26, 1284. Since 1917, it has been owned by the city of Hameln, and today a restaurant operates in the Pied Piper House. The facade has been preserved in its original condition.
