The “Große und Weiße Moor,” covering 654 ha, is one of the best-preserved raised bogs in Lower Saxony. In 1953, the core area was designated a nature reserve. Gradually, the district of Rotenburg (Wümme) purchased additional land to expand the nature reserve and restore former agricultural land to its natural wetland state. Since 1999, the nature reserve has also been a FFH site (Flora-Fauna-Habitat site) and part of the European NATURA 2000 network of protected areas.
The Long Moor Loop has been incorporated into the NORDPFADE hiking trail network: 24 circular hiking trails, all of which run through the district of Rotenburg (Wümme). Here, the circular hiking trail is called "NORDPFAD Dör' t Moor" and is marked accordingly on site. The shorter “Small Moor Loop” route is marked as a variant.
Moor Zone
The Moor Zone is located southwest of the Großer Bullensee. The Moor Zone features several informational signs about the moor and many great spots to relax and observe nature.
Observation Tower
From the covered observation tower, you can—with a little luck—quietly observe birds such as the common buzzard, sparrowhawk, or marsh harrier, as well as wildlife. In any case, the observation tower offers a lovely spot for a leisurely break.
Kleiner Bullensee and Großer Bullensee
The two highlights on the edge of the raised bog are the Kleiner Bullensee, which is a protected nature reserve, and the Großer Bullensee, which is perfect for swimming.
Here, the Rotenburg (Wümme) and NABU Rotenburg have jointly created a network of hiking trails featuring interactive and educational information boards and themed pavilions, as well as a moor experience zone, so that visitors can explore the moor at their own pace along trails of varying lengths.
Below is an overview of the nature experiences in the Großes and Weißes Moor. On site, you’ll also find a informational sign.
Nature Trail Hiking Paths and NORDPFAD Dör 't Moor
To help you cross the moor without getting your feet wet, the following four nature trail hiking paths have been created. These are marked with colored trail markers.
- Small Bullensee Loop (yellow dotted), approx. 1.5 km
- Large Bullensee Loop (green dotted), approx. 2.5 km
- Small Moor Loop (blue dotted), approx. 7.5 km
- Long Moor Loop (red dotted), approx. 11.5 km

Für den barrierefreien Besuch eines Hochmoores bietet sich das Naturschutzgebiet Tister Bauernmoor an. Eine kleine Moorbahn (unbedingt Fahrzeiten beachten!) führt Besucher mit Rollatoren oder einem Rollstuhl direkt zu einer barrierefreien Plattform. Unterwegs erfahren Sie viel Wissenswertes rund um das Moor. Am Moorbahn-Bahnhof gibt es zudem eine Toilette für Rollstuhlfahrende Directions & Parking facilities
- Das Naturschutzgebiet Große und Weiße Moor befindet sich südlich der Kreisstadt Rotenburg (Wümme) und schließt an dem Kleinen und Großen Bullensee an.
Mit dem PKW:
Aus Bremen oder Hamburg kommend, nehmen Sie die A 1 (Abfahrt Stuckenborstel) sowie B 75 (Ausfahrt Rotenburg Mitte) in Richtung Rotenburg (Wümme). In Rotenburg folgen Sie der Beschilderung nach Visselhövede (B 440). Von dort biegen Sie rechts ein auf die K 206 in Richtung Kirchwalsede. Erneut nach etwa 1 km rechts abbiegen und der Beschilderung "Parkplatz Großer Bullensee" folgen.
Wenn Sie aus Hannover anreisen, folgen Sie der A 27 (Abfahrt Verden-Ost) und fahren Sie über Kirchlinteln und Kirchwalsede, folgen sie der K 206 in Richtung B 440 Rotenburg / Visselhövede und biegen Sie etwa 1 km vor der B 440 links in Richtung "Parkplatz Großer Bullensee" ab.
Per Bahn und Rad bzw. zu Fuß:
Die Kreisstadt Rotenburg (Wümme) ist sehr gut per Bahn erreichbar. Die Bahngesellschaft "metronom" bietet eine direkte Verbindung zwischen Hamburg und Bremen, mit Rotenburg (Wümme) als Zwischenstopp. Zudem verkehrt die EVB zwischen Verden und Rotenburg (Wümme), so dass auch eine unkomplizierte Anreise aus Hannover oder Minden möglich ist. Bei allen diesen Zugverbindungen ist eine Fahrradmitnahme möglich. Weitere Infos zu den Bahnverbindungen finden Sie unter www.bahn.de.
Leider gibt es keine direkte Busverbindung, die vom Rotenburger Bahnhof ins Naturschutzgebiet führt, die Buslinie 805 führt lediglich bis nach Unterstedt-Ortsmitte. Von dort sind es jedoch noch ca. 1,6 km bis zum Anfang des Naturschutzgebietes und den Wanderwegen "Dör 't Moor". Infos zu den Busverbindungen finden Sie unter www.vbn.de
Zu Fuß und per Rad:
Vom Bahnhof können Sie zudem bequem zu Fuß (z. B. auf dem NORDPFAD Rotenburger Wasserreich und dem NORDPFAD Dör't Moor) oder mit dem Fahrrad auf schönen Wegen ins Große und Weiße Moor gelangen. More information
- Vor Ort, direkt an der Großen Moorrunde bzw. dem NORDPFAD Dör 't Moor finden sich zwei historische Schafställe und Grabhügel aus der Steinzeit sowie der Mitmach- und Erlebnisgarten MEGa auf dem Hartmannshof.
Wer möchte, kann sich direkt am "Tischlein-deck-Dich!"-Rastplatz, der sich hinter dem historischen Schafstall Spieker befindet, eine leckere Brotzeit, einen wärmenden Eintopf oder eine schöne Kaffeetafel servieren lassen. Ein kluinarisches Angebot, das insbesondere für Wandergruppen bis ca. 12 Personen interessant ist.
