The Canossian Convent, originally located in neighboring Heeslingen, was relocated to Zeven in 1141 and became a Benedictine convent there. Today, the convent complex, with St. Viti Church at its heart, is the focal point and landmark of Zeven. For visitors, the Zeven Monastery Museum offers many fascinating details about the complex, presented in an engaging way. Within the thick walls made of boulders, for example, you’ll find 17th-century murals, a 500-year-old coin hoard, and original Art Deco porcelain—which was produced in Zeven for only five years in the 1920s. You can also immerse yourself in the history of the monastery.

The Gauss Room in the “Haus des Handwerks.” In 1824–25, the mathematician and astronomer Gauss lived for about six weeks in what was then a post station. The small exhibition in the gable room documents his land surveying work and his activities in Zeven.
