Exhibitions
The permanent exhibitions focus on nature as a habitat for flora and fauna and the impact of humans since the Stone Age. This also includes an aquarium, where visitors can discover the local underwater world along the course of the River Hunte, as well as a mineral vault.
A museum for young and old
The extensive accompanying programme allows visitors to delve deeper into the content of the exhibitions in themed tours and lectures. Young explorers are integrated into the exhibitions in a playful way. Guided tours for children, holiday courses and regular play and creative activities make a visit to the museum the perfect family outing. Children's birthday parties are also possible here.
History of the State Museum of Nature and Man Oldenburg
The State Museum was founded in 1836 by Grand Duke Paul Friedrich August as the "Natural History Museum", making it one of the oldest museums in Germany. It is also the oldest extracurricular place of learning, as the museum already had a classroom in 1901. The once purely natural history collection was gradually expanded and today mainly comprises exhibits from the fields of natural history, ethnology and archaeology. In the course of this, the name was changed several times and the building has only been called the Oldenburg State Museum of Nature and Man since 2000.
