Golden domes and bronze bells in the Südheide
Craftsmanship, history and visions: The Bell Palace is not just any museum or exhibition building. It is a place of work and an exhibition building for artisans from East and West, a bell foundry, a monument to Russian monastery architecture and a tribute to the life's work of Mikhail Gorbachev and Albert Schweitzer.
In 1996, the former President of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev laid the foundation stone for the Bell Palace in Gifhorn together with his wife Raissa. Gorbachev was also the patron of the imposing building.
The Bell Palace with its inner courtyard is arranged in a square and has three storeys. The towers and the surrounding gallery with carvings and decorations are in the tradition of Russian wooden architecture. The typical golden domes are also modeled on an old Russian-style monastery.
The building is located on the open-air grounds in front of the International Mill Museum and, together with the European Liberty Bell and forms a historical ensemble.
The Bell Palace is crowned by a stylized replica of the Russian Tsar Bell from 1730 from the Moscow Kremlin, the largest bell in the world. The figure of St. Joseph, patron saint of craftsmen and artists, is enthroned above it all.
The large building is divided into three sections: the north and south wings and the bell foundry.
In the north wing, information is provided on architecture and the art of building. A large area is dedicated to the life and work of Mikhail Gorbachev. Photo walls show scenes from the time of reunification and from Gorbachev's visits to Gifhorn.
