The European Liberty Bell is not open to the public until further notice.
The imposing monument on the grounds in front of the Gifhorn Mühlenmuseum is around 16 meters high and stands on a base measuring 20 x 20 meters. It commemorates the division of Germany and Europe and the peaceful fall of the Iron Curtain

Gifhorn is more suitable than almost any other town for a memorial commemorating the division of Germany. This is because the district of Gifhorn was a geographical border area and bordered directly on the former GDR. Today, Gifhorn lies in the middle of Germany and in the middle of Europe.

The bronze bell of the European Liberty Bell, which weighs around ten tons, depicts the portraits of four important personalities: Mikhail Gorbachev, George Bush senior, Helmut Kohl and Gyula Horn. The four politicians made a significant contribution to overcoming borders and unifying Germany and Europe. The memorial was created on a private initiative by the non-profit association "Die Brücke" e. V. and was financed by donations. The then Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Christian Wulff, was the patron of the memorial.
