Einbeck beer barrel path - Barrel 3: Of elaborate umbels and great beer pleasure
Welcome to the Einbeck Beer Trail. We’re glad you’re setting out to discover our delicious beer! Follow the “Fass-Spur” through Einbeck!
Information from Keg 3:
If you look out of this corner toward the outskirts of town, you’ll see St. Alexandri Cathedralrising up there . Do you have a little time? Then be sure to take a detour inside. The wooden choir stalls, featuring an inscription from 1288, are especially worth seeing. It’s the oldest dated choir stall in Germany! Carved heads, leaf masks, and other artistic decorations adorn it, including a hop cone. This means that people were already familiar with this important ingredient for brewing beer back then.
And while we’re on the subject of churches: It’s documented that the city of Wittenberg presented its most famous citizen, the theologian and reformer Martin Luther, with a barrel of Einbeck beer as a wedding gift in 1525. As early as 1521, at the Diet of Worms, the Duke of Brunswick is said to have offered Luther a jug of Einbeck beer to fortify him. Luther—so the story goes—uttered the remarkable phrase: “The best drink anyone knows is called Einbecker beer.”
The Einbeck city chronicler Johannes Letzner (1596) also heaped high praise on Einbeck beer: “It has a fine color, a wholesome aroma, and a pure taste; when consumed in moderation, it allows a person to be cheerful without losing their reason or harming their health in any way, […]. It refreshes and revives the bright, fiery heart, strengthens the brain, aids digestion, cools the heat, quenches thirst, and is an exceedingly healthy and beneficial drink for the sick.”
To reach the next barrel, No. 4, on Tiedexer Straße, turn left and walk a few meters along Haspel Street toward the StadtMuseum.
