Biosphärenreservat Niedersächsische Elbtalaue

Biosphere reserve
A unique floodplain landscape can be experienced in the Lower Saxony Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve. The Elbe has shaped the landscape here and regularly floods the floodplain.

The dyke separates the floodplain from the wide Elbe marsh. The near-natural bank changes its appearance again and again: sandy dune fields, dry sandy grassland and pine forests are followed by flowering river valley meadows and wet swamp forest. However, the UNESCO-recognized reserve, which was established in 2002, does not only protect nature. The landscape has also been shaped by man: green pastures, fields and half-timbered houses - just a few examples of the cultural landscape that has been created.

Rare and endangered animal species

The natural areas provide a habitat for endangered plant and animal species. The characteristic animal of the floodplain, the Elbe beaver, was long thought to be extinct. Together with the otter, it can now be spotted on the banks again. In the winter months, thousands of resting geese can be spotted. Another bird characterizes the townscape in many villages: the white stork.

Exploring the river landscape from the water is particularly attractive - whether by excursion steamer, solar-powered raft or canoe. Several cycle paths also lead through the biosphere reserve: the Vogelkieker tour takes up the theme of local biodiversity and the biosphere crossing allows you to experience the reserve from very different perspectives. The Elbe cycle path along the riverbank is one of the most popular long-distance cycle paths in Germany. Hikers are rewarded with sweeping views after smaller climbs, such as on the Klötzie-Stieg.

The Biosphaerium Elbtalaue is the ideal starting point for any discovery tour. The information center uses models to explain the ecosystem, but beavers and fish can also be observed live. The development of the Arche-Region to protect endangered livestock breeds is one approach to the sustainable development of the region. You can find out more about rare pigs, donkeys and cattle at the Amt Neuhaus Ark Center and the Ark farms.
